Evesham / AOpen Mini PC

The first Mac Mini rip off has arrived on the market. The Mini PC (formally known as Pandora) was "designed" by AOpen and supplied by Evesham. I guess it was inevitable that someone would borrow the design of the Mac Mini sooner or later, and what a good job they have done!! The overall look is the same except for a rather large power button under the DVD slot and a large embossed Evesham insignia underneath that. Hardly the sleek subtle minimalist look that Apple went for. The spec is similar to the Mac with the same amount of ports and audio connections at the back but it doesn’t offer WI-FI or Bluetooth as standard. There is a 2GHz (Mac top spec is 1.66GHz) option but apparently the CPU cooler can get quite noisy when the machine gets hot, not something you want if its sat on top of your desk!step2_macminibeauty20060228.jpg

If you would like a more detailed and diplomatic review of the machine above please visit the Register for their full opinion.

All I have to say is if a company is going to copy the design of a popular product they should try and better it and not make it more expensive than the original, that seems to be a tad crazy!

  1. It is all well and good slagging off the MiniPC, but at least runs hundreds more programs and games than the MacMini.I admit it doesn’t look as good at the MacMini, but I want something that I can just plug into my network, easily access my Thecus NAS ( http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=1&pid=2 ) and conect to my Shuttle ( http://eu.shuttle.com/en/DesktopDefault.aspx/tabid-72/170_read-11119/ ) and play DVDs on. I don’t necessarily want a work of art … πŸ™‚
