Intel Core Duo

indexintelchip20060109.jpgYesterday Apple released the first of their new wave of machines with Intel chips. These honored machines are the MacBook Pro and iMac. Whats so great I hear you shout? Well..this is the first time Intel has made a processor chip for Apple and they haven’t done it by halves. " This revolutionary bit of technology is actually two processors built into a single chip, giving Mac’s up to twice the horsepower it had previously." But its much more than just that, its the first Intel chip that uses the 65-nanometre process, which allows for the creation of transistors so small, you could fit 100 into a single human cell!! WOW! This will enable the chip to achieve far higher levels of performance while actually consuming less power. Pretty impressive stuff.

What do you get for your money then? Well the top end MacBook Pro will carve a £2,059.01 chunk from your wallet, but this will get you…

  • 2GB 667 DDR2 – 2x1GB SO-DIMMs
  • 120GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm)
  • ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 – 256MB GDDR3
  • Backlit Keyboard & Mac OS
  • 15.4-inch TFT display
  • 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
  • SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
  • Power Adapter
  • Battery

Notice the 1.83GHZ Intel Core DUO (that means x2 baby!)
If a desktop is what you want then the top end iMac will cost you £1709.00 and that will hook you up with…

  • 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM – 2x1GB
  • 500GB Serial ATA drive
  • ATI Radeon X1600 with 256MB SDRAM
  • Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X
  • 20-inch TFT display
  • 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo
  • SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)
  • AirPort Extreme
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • I think it will be interesting to see what Apple come up with over the next year or so, can Intel improve on what IBM started (but could never finish?) Im waiting for the 4GHz Intel Core Duo G5! You know it will happen!
